The Nance

Elmwood Playhouse presents, The Nance.  May 16-June7, 2025. Chauncey Miles plays a “nance,” a stock character in Prohibition-era vaudeville that portrayed a gay man as an effeminate caricature. As Chauncey struggles to claim his identity and find acceptance, the boisterous burlesque performances featured in this period drama provide a sharp contrast to the real-world prejudice and censorship that ultimately brought the burlesque era to an end.  Written by Douglas Carter Beane.  Directed by Alan Demovsky.
