Rockland Secures 236 Acres for Future Parkland & Trails
Rockland County recently celebrated the purchase of 236 acres of undeveloped land in the Eagle Valley Assemblage. It is the largest open space purchase in the county’s Open Space Acquisition Program history. With this milestone, the county hopes to establish a connection and corridor of the undeveloped land between Sterling Forest and Harriman State Parks, two of New York’s most beloved state parks, ensuring easier access to vast landscapes and scenic escapes, all just a short trip from New York City.
The acquisition, made possible through a partnership with the Open Space Institute, was celebrated at Valley Rock Inn, a wellness-focused inn, restaurant, and event venue in Sloatsburg that neighbors the protected land and serves as a natural gateway to adventure.
What it means for visitors:
- Plans are underway for a new county park and expanded trail connections, adding to Rockland’s outdoor recreation options and linking Harriman and Sterling Forest State Parks.
- The preserved land protects wildlife habitats and water resources, ensuring Rockland’s open spaces remain vibrant for generations of explorers.
