What Is Economic Development

Economic development is a strategic approach to building vibrant local economies through deliberate choices and actions. At its core, it involves programs, policies, and activities aimed at improving the economic well-being and quality of life for communities by creating and retaining jobs while providing a stable tax base. Economic development organizations and professionals work daily to enhance the health of local economies through various initiatives.

Economic Development Programs: Core Services

Economic developers drive community growth by supporting entrepreneurs with permits and financing, helping businesses expand through infrastructure and tax assistance, facilitating new business locations, designing workforce training, revitalizing neighborhoods, sharing market data, promoting community development, and managing disaster recovery efforts.

Why Invest in Economic Development During Prosperity?

Even in times of low unemployment and strong growth, communities face key challenges. Worker shortages limit business expansion, while rapid growth can strain quality of life. Strategic economic development during prosperous periods helps communities maintain competitiveness through diversification, infrastructure improvements, and workforce training. Additionally, strong economic conditions create ideal opportunities to invest in marginalized communities, expand labor pools, support small business growth, and enhance educational systems for sustained future success.
