Rockland County has a history that goes back centuries, to the Native Americans who first settled here, followed by Dutch and British settlers. This was also the site of important battles in the American Revolutionary War in the late 18th century. Agriculture, manufacturing, and religion all played a prominent part of Rockland County’s history in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Historic sites of interest include two important Revolutionary War locations: the Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site and Stony Point Lighthouse, and the DeWint House, which once served as George Washington’s headquarters. Several historic homes built in the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the Jacob Blauvelt Farmhouse, Salyer House, and DePew House portray how early Americans lived around the time of the Revolutionary War. Smaller museums highlight the impact of the industrial age, such as the Haverstraw Brick Museum and the Suffern Railroad Museum.
